Finding Flow in My Work
As I change and grow, moving into work that feels more meaningful and true to my life’s purpose, my relationship to the idea of work also transforms.
In my early 20s, I interned as a gallery assistant in NYC’s Chelsea neighbourhood. Tom Sachs was one of the artists we represented. I sometimes think of something I once heard him say —
‘The reward for good work is more work.’
In the many years since then, I’ve found this statement to be true no matter if I loved or disliked the work I was doing.
If I performed well, more responsibilities and expectations would come my way.
But there were periods when I did not feel fully aligned with my purpose, and more work would be offered to me that didn’t feel like the right fit.
I was lucky to be guided into a position that allowed me to realign with my life’s purpose. I saw that my mission was like a yin and yang — sharing my creative gifts balanced by helping others find and express theirs.
Now I find meaning and purpose in my work each day, and work itself becomes a gift. Opportunities that ‘feel right’ flow my way more easily, and I’m more easily able to pass on things that don’t fit.
This brings me to another thing I’ve heard others say —
